Schoppert-Cotton House (pre-1856)

230 Prairie Ave.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Phillip Schewart was born in 1800 at Newberry Courthouse, South Carolina, and was living in this house when listed in Snedecor’s 1856 directory as a builder in Eutaw.  The original house plan was similar to Grassdale, with Italian roof of the Duncan Dew House and chimneys reminiscent of the builders native South Carolina.  Edward Ustick obtained the house in 1899 at which time the porch was added, and other features changed.

IN MEMORY OF ROY SWAYZE:

The late Mr. Roy Swayze was recognized at the White House by
President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan for his years of effort to restore the
Eutaw home “Kirkwood”.  Mr. Swayze’s Kirkwood efforts began a movement
to save and restore antebellum homes in West Alabama.  Mr. Swayze was a Greene County Historic Society member.   He envisioned the society purchasing an antebellum home on the brink of destruction, stabilizing it, selling it and then moving on to the next home.  Above is the first home that the GCHS purchased to save from demolition.  Our goal was to stabilize it and simultaneously offer it for sale to cover the costs we invested into it!  We are succeeding with the restoration and now need a buyer to finish it off to their liking !!

As you can see we are making gr8 progress !  We need your donations in the following ways:

  1. 1.Manual labor:  Won’t you join a work weekend to help us clean up this piece of history?

  2. 2.Subject Matter Expertise:  Are you a carpenter, an electrician, a roofer, brick layer, a plumber, or other subject matter expert who would be willing to donate time to guide us?

  3. 3.Monetary Contributions:  the home purchase price alone took thousands of dollars

Please call Barden, (205) 500-0780,

to contribute in any manner.  Thank you!
